The inaugural JMC Club League brings clubs together for four days of structured, rated team chess across Adult and Junior competitions.

The Inaugural Season

The 2026 JMC Club League is a new structured team competition created to strengthen club chess across Johannesburg.

The League is designed to build club identity, rivalry and player retention while creating meaningful long-format competition for adult and junior players.

The 2026 season will serve as the pilot season and establish the foundation for future divisions, promotion and relegation.

Elite Junior Exception

A junior may elect to play in the Adult League where the player is at least 16 years old by the first League day and has a published ChessSA / CHESSA rating of at least 1700 at the registration deadline.

A player may not compete in both leagues during the same season.

Centralised Venue Model

The proposed venue for the 2026 pilot season is Wanderers Chess Club, subject to final venue confirmation and logistical arrangements.

How the League Works

The final structure will be confirmed after registrations close and will depend on the number of accepted teams.

4–8 Teams

Single Round Robin

Each team plays every other team in its League or section.

9–16 Teams

Pools and Finals

Teams may be placed into balanced pools using average team ratings and serpentine allocation, followed by crossover or championship matches.

17 or More Teams

Swiss Team Format

A Swiss team structure may be used where entries exceed the practical round-robin or pool capacity.

Every admitted team will have a route to the title. Pairing numbers will be randomly assigned after pools or sections have been determined.

Fixed Squad

Each team registers a fixed squad of six to eight players.

Every registered player forms part of the official squad.

Multiple Teams

Clubs may enter multiple teams, subject to capacity and JMC approval.

Upward Movement Only

Players may not move downward between teams from the same club during the season.

Captain-Selected Line-ups

Flexible Board Order

Captains may select a different board order and playing line-up for every round from the registered squad.

  • Separate line-up required for each round
  • Line-up deadline: Friday at 20h00
  • Initial squad order applies if no line-up is submitted
  • Emergency substitutions require approval

R 2,200 per team

This fee reflects the equivalent minimum contribution of an affiliated club entering a team.

  • Applications initially placed on a waitlist

  • Does not grant JMC voting or affiliation rights

Limited to 20 Teams

The initial allocation is up to 10 Adult League teams and 10 Junior League teams. Remaining places may be reallocated after the preferential entry period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a club enter more than one team?

Yes. Clubs may enter multiple teams, but JMC may limit accepted entries to maximise the number of clubs represented during the pilot season.

Can a player represent two clubs?

No. A player may represent only one club during the 2026 League season.

Can a player compete in both the Adult and Junior League?

No. A player may participate in only one League during the season.

Can junior players compete in the Adult League?

Only where the elite junior exception applies. The player must be at least 16 years old by the first League day and have a published ChessSA / CHESSA rating of at least 1700 at the registration deadline.

Are there separate reserve players?

No. Each team registers one fixed squad of six to eight players. Every registered player forms part of the team squad.

Can captains change their board order?

Yes. Captains may select a different line-up and board order for every round, provided the line-ups are submitted before the published deadline.

Is the League rated?

Yes. League games are intended to be submitted for ChessSA / CHESSA rating, subject to the applicable rating requirements.

Can non-affiliated clubs enter?

Yes. Applications are initially placed on a waitlist and admission depends on remaining capacity after the affiliated club preference period.

Can a non-affiliated club win the League?

Yes. All admitted teams may compete for the relevant title unless JMC expressly admits a team as a guest or exhibition team.

Are cash prizes awarded?

No. The 2026 pilot season will award medals, trophies and possible certificates or floating trophies.
